Acanthus mollis(from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acanthus_mollis)
Acanthus mollis, commonly known as Bear's Breech, is a herbaceous perennial plant in the genus Acanthus, native to southern Europe (Portugal east to Croatia) and northwest Africa, and is one of the earliest cultivated species of garden plants.
It grows to 2 m tall, with basal clusters of deeply lobed and cut, shining dark green leaves up to 1 m long and 20 cm broad.
The flowers are tubular, whitish, lilac or rose with spiny green or purplish bracts, and produced on stout spikes which grow up to 2.5 m (8 ft) above the leaves.
It flowers in late spring or early summer.
It grows in dry areas, and is tolerant of drought and shade.
The plants are propagated from tubers and tend to form large, localized clumps which can survive for several decades.
The leaves of this plant are generally considered by historians to have been the design inspiration for the Corinthian column capitals of Roman architecture.

Allium christophiiMetallic purple blooms in the late spring, one of the most beautiful onions in the genus! Blooms gradually dry and turn tan providing a visual treat all summer and into the fall.
Blooms also last well as cut flowers with no offensive smell.
The blooms consist of many small starry flowers in large purple globose clusters, up to 12 inches in diameter, on 12-20 inch tall stems.
The flower stems dry easily, and are great additions to dry flower arrangements. These have bluish-green strap-like leaves, with silky hair on the underside, up to 18 inches long (45 cm), the leaves disappear as the flowers open, and are usually all dried up and gone before the blooms have faded.
These are not bothered by deer, rodents or slugs, there can be some problems with underground pests such as bulb mites and maggots.
Star of Persia is very happy growing in a landscape with other plants, since it loses the foliage early, by the time when it blooms in May, planting with hosta or another deciduous plant works very well.
Hardy in zones 4 - 8. Planting depth to base of bulb: 4 - 8 inches Spacing between bulbs: 12 inches
Light requirements: full sun to part shade
Good drainage is a MUST, bulbs like ample water in the spring, dryer in the summer when they are dormant, planting with other plants that take up excess water in the summer is fine.

Allium schoenoprasum(from http://www.ibiblio.org/pfaf/cgi-bin/arr_html?Allium+schoenoprasum)
Bulb growing to 0.3m by 0.3m . It is in leaf from February to December, in flower from June to July, and the seeds ripen from July to August.
The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils, requires well-drained soil and can grow in heavy clay soil. Cultivation details it prefers a sunny position in a rich moist but well-drained soil, though it succeeds in most soils and also in light shade. Tolerates a pH in the range 5.2 to 8.3. Chives are commonly cultivated in the garden for their edible leaves which are available from late winter to the beginning of the following winter. The bulbs divide rapidly and large clumps are quickly formed. Chives are very tolerant of heavy harvesting, regular cutting of the leaves ensures a continuous supply of young leaves and prevents the plants flowering. The bulbs should be planted fairly deeply. A good bee plant.
Propagation Seed - sow spring in a cold frame. Germination is usually free and easy, pot up the seedlings as soon as they are large enough to handle easily and plant out in the following spring. Division can be carried out at almost any time of the year but is probably best done in spring. The clumps should be divided at least every 3 or 4 years in order to maintain vigour, the divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. Flowers are excellent for cutting, fresh or dried. Great for edging. Chives are inclined to seed themselves around, which can be prevented by removing the flower heads as they begin to fade. Easily divided in spring or fall.
