The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils.

An easily grown plant, it prefers a sunny position in a light well-drained soil. Succeeds also in clay soils. Established plants are fairly drought tolerant. Plants succeed in maritime gardens.

5729Allium christophiiMetallic purple blooms in the late spring, one of the most beautiful onions in the genus! Blooms gradually dry and turn tan providing a visual treat all summer and into the fall.
Blooms also last well as cut flowers with no offensive smell.
The blooms consist of many small starry flowers in large purple globose clusters, up to 12 inches in diameter, on 12-20 inch tall stems.
The flower stems dry easily, and are great additions to dry flower arrangements. These have bluish-green strap-like leaves, with silky hair on the underside, up to 18 inches long (45 cm), the leaves disappear as the flowers open, and are usually all dried up and gone before the blooms have faded.
These are not bothered by deer, rodents or slugs, there can be some problems with underground pests such as bulb mites and maggots.
Star of Persia is very happy growing in a landscape with other plants, since it loses the foliage early, by the time when it blooms in May, planting with hosta or another deciduous plant works very well.
Hardy in zones 4 - 8. Planting depth to base of bulb: 4 - 8 inches Spacing between bulbs: 12 inches
Light requirements: full sun to part shade
Good drainage is a MUST, bulbs like ample water in the spring, dryer in the summer when they are dormant, planting with other plants that take up excess water in the summer is fine.

Established plants are drought tolerant. A very ornamental plant, it should be planted into its permanent position as soon as possible because it dislikes root disturbance. The whole plant contains a very aromatic essential oil, giving out a scent somewhat like lemon peel. When the plant is bruised, this smell becomes more like fine balsam. This essential oil is emitted from the plant in hot weather and, on a still day, can be ignited and will burn for a second or two without harming the plant, thus giving the plant its common name. Slugs are strongly attracted to this plant and can destroy it by eating all the young growth in spring. The flowers are very attractive to bees.
Propagation Seed - best sown in a cold frame as soon as it is ripe. Cold stratify stored seed for 6 weeks and sow in the spring in a cold frame. The seed usually germinates in 1 - 6 months at 15°c. As soon as they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Division in spring. Take care since the plant resents root disturbance. The plant can also be divided in autumn. Root cuttings in November/December.

It is in flower from July to August.
The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils.
It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade.
It requires moist soil.

This species is easily grown in any good garden soil so long as it is deep enough to accommodate its roots, though it prefers alkaline conditions.
It prefers full sun but succeeds in partial shade.
A slow-growing plant, it takes many years to reach its full stature. A moisture loving plant, growing well by water, it prefers to grow with full exposure to the sun but with plenty of underground moisture in the summer and it grows better in the north.
They are very long lived, to 50 years or more.

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a light position in a cold frame.
It can also be sown in late winter or early spring but the seed germinates best if given a period of cold stratification.
It is advantageous to keep the seed at about 10°c for a few days after sowing, to enable the seed to imbibe moisture.
The seed should be surface-sown, or only covered with a very light dressing of compost.
The seed requires dark for germination, so the pots should be covered with something like newspaper or be kept in the dark.

Although each individual Lily-like flower (which in this strain can be up to 5-7 ins. across) only lasts for a day (two at the most), they are produced generously and the plant remains in bloom for several weeks. Most should flower the second year from seed. 2½-3½ ft.

Characteristics Perennial. It is frost tender. It is in flower from August to September. The plant prefers light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and can grow in heavy clay soil. The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils. It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade. It requires dry or moist soil.
Thrives in most fertile soils if they are rich in humus. Grows well in heavy clay soils and in sandy ones. Very limy soils inhibit growth, but plants can thrive in such a situation if plenty of humus is added. Prefers a pH between 6 and 7. Succeeds in full sun as well as in deep shade, growing well in the semi-shade of a woodland. Members of this genus are rarely if ever troubled by browsing deer and rabbits. Plants are very attractive to slugs and snails, the young shoots in spring are especially at risk.
Propagation Seed - sow spring in a lightly shaded position in a greenhouse and only just cover the seed. Germination usually takes place within 1 - 3 months at 10°c. Make sure you keep the compost moist. Division is possible at almost any time of the year so long as there is sufficient moisture. Hostas can be left undivided for many years and should not be divided any more frequently than once every 3 - 5 years to allow the leaves to reach maturity.

3754Papaver orientale(from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Papaver_orientale) The Oriental poppy (Papaver orientale) is a perennial poppy of the genus Papaver. Aside from its natural brilliant orange-scarlet, since the later 19th century selective breeding for gardens has created a range of colors from clean white with eggplant-black blotches ("Barr's White" is the standard against which other whites are measured), through clear true pinks and salmon pinks to a deep maroon. Oriental poppies throw up a mound of handsome, finely cut hairy foliage in spring. After flowering, the foliage dies away entirely, an adaptation to survival in the summer drought of Central Asia. Late-developing plants should be planted nearby, to fill the developing gap. Fresh leaves appear with autumn rains.

Description: Named after the only daughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany (a Zeppelin was named after her too), this is an old and splendid variety of the Oriental Poppy bearing large, dinner-plate-sized blooms with crêpe paper petals of a lovely, deep salmon-rose, coral/apricot colour. With care, repeat flowering. 2 ft. Crumpled, tissue paper-thin petals in pretty salmon-pink colors are shaded by pronounced black blotches at their bases. A handsome blue-green clump of hairy, deeply cut foliage and long, somewhat relaxed stems present the dazzling display, while big fuzzy buds and knobby seed heads add intrigue. Conveying a decidedly feminine aspect for the herbaceous border, ‘Princess Victoria Louise’ thrives in rich soil, requires a trim after blooming and seared stem ends to ensure long lasting cut flowers. 2475Pulsatilla (Anemone) vulgaris(from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulsatilla)
Pasque flowers (or pasqueflowers) are deciduous perennials that are found in short clumps in meadows and prairies of North America and Eurasia.
The genus Pulsatilla includes about 30 species, many of which are valued for their finely-dissected leaves, solitary bell-shaped flowers, and plumed seed heads.
In its tallgrass prairie habitat, it is one of the first plants to bloom in the spring, often before the late winter snows have thawed.
This genus is sometimes included as part of genus Anemone as subgenus Pulsatilla, and is also commonly known as the Prairie crocus.
The pasque flower is the official state flower of South Dakota and the provincial flower of Manitoba.
