Cultivation details it prefers a sunny position in a rich moist but well-drained soil, though it succeeds in most soils and also in light shade. Tolerates a pH in the range 5.2 to 8.3. Chives are commonly cultivated in the garden for their edible leaves which are available from late winter to the beginning of the following winter. The bulbs divide rapidly and large clumps are quickly formed. Chives are very tolerant of heavy harvesting, regular cutting of the leaves ensures a continuous supply of young leaves and prevents the plants flowering. The bulbs should be planted fairly deeply. A good bee plant.
Propagation Seed - sow spring in a cold frame. Germination is usually free and easy, pot up the seedlings as soon as they are large enough to handle easily and plant out in the following spring. Division can be carried out at almost any time of the year but is probably best done in spring. The clumps should be divided at least every 3 or 4 years in order to maintain vigour, the divisions can be planted out direct into their permanent positions. Flowers are excellent for cutting, fresh or dried. Great for edging. Chives are inclined to seed themselves around, which can be prevented by removing the flower heads as they begin to fade. Easily divided in spring or fall.

It is in flower from July to August.
The plant prefers acid, neutral and basic (alkaline) soils.
It can grow in semi-shade (light woodland) or no shade.
It requires moist soil.

This species is easily grown in any good garden soil so long as it is deep enough to accommodate its roots, though it prefers alkaline conditions.
It prefers full sun but succeeds in partial shade.
A slow-growing plant, it takes many years to reach its full stature. A moisture loving plant, growing well by water, it prefers to grow with full exposure to the sun but with plenty of underground moisture in the summer and it grows better in the north.
They are very long lived, to 50 years or more.

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a light position in a cold frame.
It can also be sown in late winter or early spring but the seed germinates best if given a period of cold stratification.
It is advantageous to keep the seed at about 10°c for a few days after sowing, to enable the seed to imbibe moisture.
The seed should be surface-sown, or only covered with a very light dressing of compost.
The seed requires dark for germination, so the pots should be covered with something like newspaper or be kept in the dark.
Cuttings of basal shoots in late spring.

Pasque flowers (or pasqueflowers) are deciduous perennials that are found in short clumps in meadows and prairies of North America and Eurasia.
The genus Pulsatilla includes about 30 species, many of which are valued for their finely-dissected leaves, solitary bell-shaped flowers, and plumed seed heads.
In its tallgrass prairie habitat, it is one of the first plants to bloom in the spring, often before the late winter snows have thawed.
This genus is sometimes included as part of genus Anemone as subgenus Pulsatilla, and is also commonly known as the Prairie crocus.
The pasque flower is the official state flower of South Dakota and the provincial flower of Manitoba.
